On January 29, 2025, the Department of Oil and Gas Refining Techniques at Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, in collaboration with the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection Technologies at Sumy State University, organized a scientific workshop titled “Sustainable Biological Technology for Biofuel Production and Environmental Protection”. The event was hosted at the Hall of Continuing Education at the Samawah Technical Institute, a branch of Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University. The workshop featured Dr. Yevhen Bataltsev from Sumy State University, who participated online, and Idris Hamoudi Ahmed, Head of Refining Techniques at the Institute, who attended in person alongside several faculty members.

The workshop addressed key topics such as biomass, biohydrogen, and fourth-generation biofuels, recognized for their efficiency and minimal environmental impact compared to traditional biofuels.

The main focus of the workshop was to introduce modern biomass-based biofuel production technologies, covering various generations of biomass fuel, along with biohydrogen production methods and applications. The session also emphasized the utilization of organic and biomass waste, converting it into clean and sustainable fuels as an alternative to fossil fuels. This transition contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering environmentally friendly energy solutions.

In addition, Dr. Yevhen Bataltsev presented an open access course “Sustainable Biotechnology and Environmental Protection”, designed for students and professionals in Iraq. This course was developed as part of the MSCA4Ukraine program, supported by the European Union, with Associate Professor Dr. Yelizaveta Chernysh serving as the contact person.
